The Prediction, Progression, and Outcomes of Chronic Kidney Disease in Older Adults Workshop was held May 9-10, 2008, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Pentagon City in Arlington, VA. The workshop was attended by participants from of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and Association of Specialty Professors.

Participants at the workshop outlined the key research issues within chronic kidney disease that interface with aging. These issues included classifying chronic kidney disease in older adults, identifying mechanisms and models of chronic kidney disease progression, and managing common comorbidities in the aging population, such as anemia, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as addressing mild cognitive impairment and frailty. The workshop reviewed the critical areas of need for future research, and formulated a research agenda to help focus resources to address this agenda.

The ASN-ASP workshop on Prediction, Progression, and Outcomes of Chronic Kidney Disease in Older Adults, was the first in a series of meetings which brought together ASP, ASN, NIA, and NIDDK to investigate the intersection of geriatrics and nephrology. The workshop series is funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation, through the ASP project “Integrating Geriatrics into the Specialties of Internal Medicine: Moving Forward from Awareness to Action.”
